Coastal Skipper Theory
Coastal Skipper theory, the step up from Day Skipper
Coastal Skipper is where planning replaces improvising. Tidal gates, pilotage plans, night passages and the judgement to abandon a plan when the forecast turns. The question bank pushes on exactly those areas rather than repeating Day Skipper recall.

What steps up at this level
- Passage planning with tidal gates, contingency ports and crew endurance
- Pilotage plans, transits and clearing bearings, including at night
- Secondary port tidal calculations and clearance problems
- COLREGs in traffic separation schemes and restricted visibility
- Night navigation, light identification and sector lights
- Weather routing and knowing when the plan should change
How to revise it
Diagnose with a mixed quiz, rebuild your weakest two topics, then work calculation topics under a timer. Coastal candidates most often lose marks to tidal arithmetic done in a hurry.
Common questions
How different is it from Day Skipper?
Same subjects, higher demand. More multi step calculation and more questions where the right answer depends on reading the whole scenario.
Can I revise Coastal and Yachtmaster together?
Yes. Progress is tracked per level so you can see readiness for each without them blurring.
