Revision plan

Yachtmaster revision, four weeks from rusty to exam ready

Most candidates revise by rereading notes. That feels productive and changes very little. This plan is built on retrieval: answer, get it wrong, read the explanation, meet it again a few days later. Everything below runs inside Amidships with a 659 question Yachtmaster Offshore bank.

    Week 1, diagnose honestly

    • Sit one mixed 40 question quiz, untimed, no notes
    • Ignore the headline score and read the topic breakdown
    • Mark your three weakest topics, these set the rest of the month
    • Start the daily drill to build the habit, one question per day takes seconds

Week 2, rebuild the weak topics

    • Two 20 question topic quizzes per day on your weakest areas
    • Read every explanation, including the ones you answered correctly by luck
    • Run memory drills for lights, shapes, sound signals and buoyage
    • Use the COLREGs glossary to settle any rule you cannot explain out loud

    Week 3, calculation under pressure

    • Timed tides sets: secondary ports, heights, streams and clearance
    • Timed navigation sets: course to steer, EP, position fixing
    • Meteorology: synoptic chart reading and forecast interpretation
    • Smart practice to resweep everything you previously got wrong

    Week 4, rehearse the exam

    • Two full timed mock exams, marked instantly with a pass verdict
    • Rehearse mock oral prompts aloud, answer first, then justify
    • Push every topic above 80 percent accuracy with full coverage
    • Rest the day before, then a short buoyage and lights refresh on the morning

What to do if you are short on time

If the exam is next week, compress it: one diagnostic quiz, then alternate a weak topic quiz and a timed mock exam each day. Coverage first, then accuracy. The readiness score tells you which of the two is holding you back.

    Common questions

How long should each revision session be?

Ten to twenty minutes, twice a day, beats one long weekend session. Short spaced sessions are what move information into long term memory.

What score means I am ready?

Full topic coverage with 80 percent or better accuracy on every topic, and a pass on two consecutive timed mock exams.

Can I revise for more than one certificate at once?

Yes. Progress is tracked separately per level, so Yachtmaster Offshore, STCW and Master 200gt readiness never blur together.
