    What the Yachtmaster prep covers

Every question is tagged to a topic and a subtopic, so weak areas surface early rather than the night before the exam.

    • COLREGs, 192 questions across steering and sailing rules, sound signals, restricted visibility and responsibilities between vessels
    • Navigation, 97 questions on chartwork, position fixing, course to steer, EP and passage planning
    • Safety, 77 questions on distress procedures, man overboard, liferafts, flares and pyrotechnics
    • Meteorology, 72 questions on synoptic charts, fronts, wind, fog and forecast interpretation
    • Seamanship, 61 questions on anchoring, berthing, towing, ropework and heavy weather handling
    • Tides, 56 questions on secondary ports, tidal heights, streams and clearance calculations
    • Buoyage, lights and shapes, 77 questions on IALA Region A and night identification
    • Stability and mock oral prompts to rehearse the questions asked face to face

    How the revision works

    • Custom quizzes: pick topics, question count and a timer to mirror exam pressure
    • Mock exams: a full paper drawn from the bank, marked instantly with a pass or fail verdict
    • Memory drills: spaced repetition cards for lights, shapes, sound signals and buoyage
    • Smart practice: the app re-serves the questions you got wrong until they stick
    • Readiness tracking: accuracy plus coverage per topic, so a high score on 10 questions never looks like mastery
    • Answer options are reshuffled each time, so you learn the content rather than the position of the right answer

    Why candidates use it

Yachtmaster theory is broad, and most failures come from the same places: tidal height arithmetic under time pressure, COLREGs edge cases, and lights identification at night. Amidships turns those into short, repeatable sessions you can do in ten minutes on a phone, with every answer explained rather than just marked.

    Common questions

How many questions do I need to answer before the exam?

Coverage matters more than volume. Aim to see every topic at least once, then push accuracy above 80 percent on your weakest three topics. The readiness score combines both so you can tell the difference between a narrow, high score and genuine preparation.

Does this replace a shorebased course?

No. Amidships is an independent study tool for revision and self-testing. Courses, sea time and certificates come from approved training centres.

Can I revise offline or on a phone?

Yes. It installs as an app on iOS and Android from the browser, and the interface is built mobile first for short sessions on the move.

Is there an oral exam practice element?

Yes. Mock oral prompts are included in the bank, and the voice oral examiner is available on the Master 200gt and Commercial Academy plans.
