Draw a line from A to B on the chart and measure the true bearing using parallel rules and the nearest compass rose.. Basic chartwork: 1. Draw a line from your departure point to your destination on the chart. 2. Use parallel rules to transfer the line to the nearest compass rose and read off the TRUE bearing. 3. Apply variation (and deviation if needed) to get magnetic/compass course. 4. Then consider tidal stream to get course to steer. The chart line gives you the ground track, you may need to steer a different course to make good that track.

Your vessel is making 7 knots. How far will she travel in 45 minutes?

Accepted Answer

5.25 nm. Speed × Time = Distance. 7 knots × (45/60) hours = 7 × 0.75 = 5.25 nm. Or use the formula: 60D = ST → D = ST/60 = 7 × 45 / 60 = 315/60 = 5.25nm. Alternatively: in 1 hour at 7kt = 7nm. In 45 min (3/4 hour) = 7 × 0.75 = 5.25nm.

Your destination is 42nm away. You are making 6 knots over the ground. You depart at 0830. What is your ETA?

Accepted Answer

1530. Time = Distance / Speed = 42 / 6 = 7 hours. ETA = 0830 + 7 hours = 1530. Always factor in tidal streams in real passage planning, SOG varies throughout a passage.
