Question 1

A liferaft hydrostatic release unit (HRU) is designed to:

Accepted Answer

Release the raft from its cradle at approximately 1.5 to 4 m if the vessel sinks, allowing inflation and float-free deployment.. The HRU (hydrostatic release unit) is a pressure-activated device. When the vessel sinks and the raft reaches a depth of 1.5-4m, water pressure activates the HRU, cutting the lashing and releasing the raft. The painter (attached to the vessel) triggers inflation as the vessel sinks further. The raft floats to the surface inflated. This ensures the raft is available even if there is no time to deploy it manually. Check expiry date on HRU.

Question 2

After boarding a liferaft, what are the immediate priorities?

Accepted Answer

Cut painter if vessel sinking, stream sea anchor, bail flooding, take seasickness tablets, assess survivors and equipment, signal rescuers.. Liferaft immediate actions: 1. CUT PAINTER from vessel (if sinking, do not be dragged down) 2. STREAM SEA ANCHOR (reduces drift, stabilises raft, keeps bow into waves) 3. BAIL/PUMP out water 4. CLOSE CANOPY ENTRANCE (protection) 5. SEASICKNESS TABLETS (most crew will vomit) 6. ACTIVATE EPIRB and SART 7. TAKE STOCK, count survivors, check injuries, check equipment 8. SIGNAL, flares, heliograph. Conserve water from the start, ration immediately.

Question 3

Your vessel is damaged and taking water but is NOT sinking. You have a liferaft. Should you abandon immediately?

Accepted Answer

No; assess the danger and remain aboard while it is safer than abandoning. Prepare the liferaft and abandon if staying aboard becomes more dangerous.. Do not abandon simply because the vessel is damaged and taking water. A vessel can provide better shelter, equipment and visibility to rescuers than a liferaft, but flooding may compromise its stability. Assess the damage and stability, control flooding where possible, alert rescuers as appropriate and prepare for abandonment. The advice to 'step up into the liferaft' discourages premature abandonment; it does not mean waiting until the vessel is actually going under. Imminent sinking, capsize, uncontrolled fire or other life-threatening hazards may justify abandonment when remaining aboard is more dangerous.
