SRC VHF

SRC VHF radio revision, procedure you can recall under pressure

Radio procedure is only useful if it comes out correctly when something has gone wrong. Practise the distress, urgency and safety formats, DSC alerting, channel discipline and GMDSS basics until the wording is automatic.

    What is covered

    • Distress, urgency and safety calls, and when each applies
    • The mayday voice format, in order, without hesitation
    • DSC distress alerts, acknowledgement and relay
    • Channel use, working channels, dual watch and channel 16 discipline
    • GMDSS sea areas and equipment carriage in outline
    • MMSI, EPIRB, SART and AIS basics

    How to drill it

Say the formats out loud. Reading a mayday format silently is not the same skill as transmitting it, and the gap shows the first time you have to do it for real.

    Common questions

Does this issue an SRC certificate?

No. Amidships is an independent revision aid. The certificate comes from an approved training centre and assessment.

Is SRC worth revising before the course?

Yes. The assessment moves quickly and familiarity with the formats beforehand makes the practical far less stressful.
