Flashcards
Yachtmaster flashcards for the things you must simply know
Some of the syllabus is judgement. Some of it is pure recall, and recall is where flashcards earn their place. Lights, shapes, sound signals, buoyage and the tidal vocabulary all respond to short, spaced sessions far better than to rereading notes.

What is on the cards
- Lights and shapes, including trawling, fishing, restricted in ability to manoeuvre, not under command and constrained by draught
- Sound signals in and out of restricted visibility
- IALA Region A buoyage, cardinal marks and their topmarks
- Tidal terms, chart datum, height of tide and clearance vocabulary
- Distress signals and pyrotechnic types
Why spaced repetition
Cards you find easy come back rarely, cards you fumble come back soon. The interval is set by your own performance, so the time you spend lands on the items you actually keep getting wrong instead of the ones you already know.
How to fit it in
Five minutes a day beats an hour on Sunday. The drill runs on a phone, so it fits into the gaps in a day, and the daily streak is there to make it a habit rather than a chore.
Common questions
Are the flashcards separate from the question bank?
They are drawn from the same content, so a card you fail and a question you miss point at the same gap and both feed topic readiness.
Can I use them offline?
Amidships installs as an app from the browser on iOS and Android, which makes short sessions on the move straightforward.
Do flashcards cover COLREGs reasoning?
Only the recall layer, such as signals and light configurations. The reasoning is better trained with scenario questions and the mock oral prompts.
