SÉCURITÉ (French: safety, spoken three times) is a safety message about an important navigational or meteorological hazard. Examples: large debris in shipping lane, drifting vessel, gale warning, hazard to navigation. Transmitted on Ch 16 (announcing) then working channel. Coastguard broadcasts gale warnings as Sécurité. Any vessel can transmit a Sécurité. Examples include debris in the water or a vessel broken down in a shipping lane.

Make the initial Sécurité call on Ch 16, directing stations to a working channel, then transmit the full message there.. SÉCURITÉ FORMAT: 1. On Ch 16: 'SÉCURITÉ SÉCURITÉ SÉCURITÉ, ALL STATIONS ALL STATIONS ALL STATIONS, THIS IS [vessel name x3], LISTEN ON CHANNEL [working channel], OUT.' 2. Switch to working channel and transmit: 'SÉCURITÉ SÉCURITÉ SÉCURITÉ, ALL STATIONS, THIS IS [vessel name], [position of hazard, lat/long or bearing/distance from known point], [description of hazard, unlit container approximately X metres by Y metres, half-submerged], OUT.' Also inform Coastguard on Ch 67.
