Exam day

Yachtmaster exam day, what to do and what to leave alone

The last week changes very little of what you know and quite a lot of how you perform. This is the short version of how to spend it, what to carry, and how to handle the questions asked face to face.

    The final week

    • Two full timed mock exams, spaced, not back to back
    • Sweep every question you previously answered wrong
    • Rehearse mock oral prompts out loud, standing up
    • Do not start a topic you have never touched, it will only unsettle you

    The day before

    • One short buoyage and lights drill, ten minutes maximum
    • Pack kit and check documents, so the morning has no decisions in it
    • Stop revising by early evening
    • Sleep is worth more than the last hour of notes

    Handling the oral questions

Answer the question first, then justify it. Examiners are listening for a decision and the reasoning behind it, not a recital. Where you are unsure, say what you would check and where you would check it, because that is what a skipper actually does.

    Practise being asked out loud

The voice oral examiner speaks a question, listens to your spoken answer and comes back on it, which is a very different exercise from reading a multiple choice option. It is included as standard on the Master 200gt and Commercial Academy plans.

    Common questions

Should I revise on the morning of the exam?

Five minutes of recall drills, nothing heavier. Anything longer tends to raise anxiety without raising your score.

What if a mock exam goes badly the day before?

Do not sit one the day before. Late failures rattle confidence far more than they inform revision.

How do I keep calm in the oral?

Slow the first answer down deliberately. Pace set at the start tends to hold for the rest of it.
